Patron Saint

Our Patron Saint

Saint John of God, Spanish San Juan De Dios, was born March 8, 1495—died March 8, 1550, Granada, Spain. Saint John of God was canonized 1690 and his feast day is March 8. He is founder of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God (Brothers Hospitallers), a Roman Catholic religious order of nursing brothers. In 1886 Pope Leo XIII declared him patron of hospitals and the sick.

Formerly a shepherd and soldier, he was so moved by the sermons of the mystic John of Avila, who became his spiritual adviser that he decided to devote his life to the care of the poor and the sick. For that purpose, he rented a house in Granada (1537), where his work won ecclesiastical approval and attracted others. Bishop Sebastián Ramírez of Túy, Spain, named him John of God.

Our Parish Prayer to St. John of God

O Lord, as you touched St. John of God, touch us too. Transform our being and give us, like him, the capacity to choose others, particularly those who suffer.

Make us sensitive to the needs of others, of being open and reaching out to those who need us.

May we like him, with his spirit, and with the aid of technology, choose to be hospitality for others, especially those who suffer.

St. John of God, patron of our Catholic Community, bless us with whatever healing each may need in accordance with God's will.

Amen
